Foundation

Scripture

By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 3:10‭-‬11 (NIV)

Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain. Psalm 127:1 (NIV)

I remember when my wife and I built our first home together. The house had three critical parts to be a stable dwelling. The first step was to lay a foundation. It is what everything of that house rests on. Our foundation was a solid concrete slab. Next, they framed the walls inside and outside of the house on top of that foundation, and the last component was the roof. You are probably wondering where I’m going with this analogy.

1 Corinthians 3:10-11, tells us that Christ is our foundation. No other foundation can compare to the strength and unmovable characteristics of Christ. Just as our physical house rested on the foundation, our soul should find rest in trusting in God and hoping in Jesus Christ. He will carry the load of everything we face just as He carried the cross. We build on the foundation of Christ by sharing the word of God. The only way to share the word is to first be a student of the word. I’m not suggesting that we should all go to seminary, but I am saying we should take time to learn the word of God, so that we can speak it.

Continuing with the house analogy, we needed to build walls to protect the content of the house. Your spiritual walls protect your heart and mind. Proverbs 4:23 - "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Just as the wall of your house protects you from the outside world.

Now the final component was the roof. God has forever been and will forever be a cover over our lives. The covering of God protects us from the rain trouble and the storms of life. Psalms 23:6 tells us, “Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
